Sainsbury’s has introduced a summer competition for electric vehicle (EV) drivers, offering one lucky customer the chance to win one million Nectar points worth £5,000 through its Smart Charge ultra-rapid EV charging service. The promotion is the largest giveaway by Sainsbury’s and runs until 20 July 2025. To enter, EV drivers must use a Smart Charge bay and scan their Nectar card to be automatically entered into a prize draw. Points can be spent on groceries at Sainsbury’s, products from Argos and Habitat or converted into Avios for flights and Eurostar bookings. They can also be donated to charities like Comic Relief and The Woodland Trust. Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury’s chief property and procurement officer and MD of Smart Charge, said: ‘We’re proud to be the UK’s first EV charging service to offer loyalty rewards from Nectar.’ Launched in early 2024, Smart Charge now has over 650 bays at 79 Sainsbury’s sites and uses 100% sustainable power with speeds of over 100kW. Amir Rasekh, Nectar360 MD, called the initiative ‘a great way to reward EV drivers through Nectar’ and an ‘excellent example of how the Nectar coalition delivers loyalty everyone loves.’
